Chairs recaned. Tables revived. All by hand in Perthshire.

I’m Craig Williams. From my workshop in Bankfoot, near Perth, I weave new cane, rush and cord seats, French polish, repair and restore furniture, and make new pieces to order.

Not sure it can be saved? Send one photo of the whole piece and one of the damage. That’s plenty to start with.

What happens to a sat-through cane seat

Three photos, three steps. This is what happens to a cane seat while it’s on my bench.

  1. Top view of a hand-caned seat that has been sat through, with a sagging, broken hole

    Sat through

Old cane goes brittle, one strand snaps, and the seat sags into a hole.

  2. A pair of Regency chair frames with the old cane cut out, showing the row of drilled holes round each seat

    Cut back to the holes

Every bit of old cane comes out, and each drilled hole round the seat is cleared.

  3. The same pair of Regency chairs with new hand-woven cane seats

    Woven new by hand

Fresh cane goes through the same holes, strand by strand, until the seat is drum tight.

The first photo is another chair from the workshop. The other two are the same pair of Regency chairs, before and after.

From dust sheets to dinner for twelve

“The removal company dropped my antique Grandfather’s oak extension dining table and smashed the joint on one leg. Craig responded to my desperate plea for help... He recovered and restored a loved piece of family history.”

Review on Yell, July 2023

“My Uncle Charles’ nursery chair was in a sad state. Scruffy, loose inlay and a seat that needed re-caning big-time... would recommend this master craftsman to anyone.”

“I also have a cherished birds-eye maple dressing table that he repaired and managed to turn into an even lovelier side table.”
